Best Free Journal App: What Free Really Means

6 min readBy Timir

In short

Almost every journal app is free to install, and almost all of them sell paid extras. The best free journal app is the one where the part you use every day stays free, so judge the free tier on what it lets you do, not on the word free.

  • In the store data we checked, every app listed free as its price, and nearly all of the Android ones also listed in-app purchases.
  • Free to install is not the same as free to use. Check what the free tier actually keeps.
  • Let it be... keeps journaling, mood tracking, breathing, gratitude and daily affirmations free with no time limit. Pro adds extras.

You have probably seen the same two words on every journal app in the store: free, and then, a few lines down, in-app purchases. Both are true at once, and the gap between them is what this guide is about.

The best free journal app is not a name on a list. It is the app whose free tier still does the thing you came for. Here is how to tell, using real store data and a plain look at our own app.

What does "free" mean for a journal app?

Free almost always means free to install, not free forever. In the Play and App Store listings we checked between August and September 2026, every journal app listed its price as free, and nearly all of the Android ones also listed in-app purchases. The word tells you the cost of the download, nothing more.

That is not a trick, just how the stores work. An app can be free to install and still keep its best features behind a purchase. Your job is to find out where that line sits before you have two months of entries inside.

How common are paid extras?

Paid extras are close to universal. Among the Android listings in our data, the in-app purchase ranges looked like this, each quoted as a per item range from the store page.

App (Play Store)PriceIn-app purchases
DaylioFree$0.99 to $79.99
Day OneFree$2.99 to $99.99
GratitudeFree$3.99 to $59.99
JourneyFree$0.99 to $199.99
ReflectlyFree$7.49 to $299.99
StoicFree$6.99 to $799.99
DiariumFree$14.99

Source: Google Play listings captured August to September 2026, per item ranges as shown on the store. The App Store rows in our data did not record purchase ranges, so we say nothing about them here. We also have no data on what each purchase unlocks, so this table shows how common paid extras are, not what they cost you in practice.

One app in our data, a Play listing called Journal with 931 ratings and a 3.5 average, showed no in-app purchases at all. A small, new listing with a low rating is not obviously the better deal, and it is a reminder that "no purchases" and "good journal" are separate questions.

How do I judge a free tier?

Judge a free tier by running the habit through it, not by reading the feature list. Write three real entries, log your mood twice, open it at night, and see whether anything you needed was behind a lock. If the daily loop works, the free tier is real. If you hit a wall by day four, it is a trial.

Three questions help:

  1. Does the thing I do every day stay free? Writing, a mood check and a prompt should not be the paid part.
  2. Is there a time limit? A free tier that expires after a week or a month is a trial, not a free app.
  3. What happens to my entries if I never pay? You should be able to keep reading and writing what you already have.

What does Let it be... keep free?

Let it be... is our own app, so read this section with that in mind. According to our Google Play listing, journaling, mood tracking, breathing, gratitude and daily affirmations are free with no time limit. Pro adds the full affirmation library, unlimited vision boards, all soundscapes and cloud backup.

That is the line we drew on purpose. The daily habit, the page, the mood check, the breathing and the gratitude entry, stays free. The extras that make the app bigger are the paid part. The Play listing shows in-app purchases from $5.99 to $59.99 per item, so Pro is a real purchase and not a hidden one.

You can read more on the Let it be... page, and our look at a private offline journal app explains where entries are stored.

What should a free journal never charge for?

A free journal should never charge for the act of writing. The page, your own history and the ability to read it back are the whole point. Charging for extras around that, such as more sounds, more themes or a backup service, is a fair trade. Charging to see your own entries is not.

If you are new to the habit, the paid features are the least important part. A beginner's guide to a journaling app covers what you need on day one, and it is very little.

What do people actually search for?

People type short, plain phrases into the store search box. In our store autocomplete check on 1 November 2026 the suggestions included journal app free, daily journal free, journaling app free, mental health journal free, gratitude journal free and journaling prompts free.

Read together, they say something simple. People are not hunting for the fanciest app. They want somewhere to write, a reason to open it daily and a bit of help with what to say. That is a good test for any free tier.

If prompts are what you are missing, our pages on gratitude journaling and journal prompts for mental health are free to read on the site, no app needed.

How to pick, in short

Pick the free journal app that survives a week of real use. Install two, write in both for a few days, and keep the one you open without being reminded. Check three things: the daily loop is free, there is no time limit, and your entries are yours if you stop paying.

Then check privacy. Ask where entries are stored, whether it works offline and whether it can be locked. A free app that you do not trust with your honest thoughts is not really free, because you will hold back.

The honest summary

Free journal apps are rarely free in the full sense, and that is fine when the line is drawn in a sensible place. The best free journal app for you is the one whose free tier keeps the daily habit, with extras you can ignore.

We built Let it be... to draw that line where the daily loop stays free. We are one of many options, and a newer one, so try it next to a couple of others and keep what you actually open.

A good free journal charges for the extras and leaves the page alone.

Take away

  • Free to install and free to use are two different promises.
  • Test the free tier by writing three entries before you pay for anything.
  • A good free journal keeps the daily habit free and charges for extras.
  • Backup and export are worth checking before you trust an app with years of writing.

Frequently asked

The best free journal app is the one whose free tier covers what you do every day: writing, a mood check and a prompt. Most apps are free to install and sell extras. Let it be... keeps journaling, mood tracking, breathing, gratitude and daily affirmations free with no time limit.
Usually free to install, not always free to use fully. In the store data we checked, every journal app listed a price of free, and almost all the Android ones also listed in-app purchases, from $0.99 up to $799.99 per item. Check what stays free before you commit.
Some apps keep the core journal free and charge only for extras. In Let it be..., journaling and mood tracking are free with no time limit, and Pro is optional. Always read the store listing for what the free tier includes, since it changes.
It depends on where the entries are stored. Ask whether they stay on your phone by default, whether the app works offline and whether you can lock it. Let it be... stores entries on the device by default and offers backup as a choice.
