Why I Built Let It Be: A Personal Story

3 min readBy Timir

In short

I built Let It Be because I needed it myself — a calm, private journaling app for the nights when anxiety wouldn't stop. Existing apps were either too feature-heavy or missing the calming tools I needed alongside the journal.

  • Born from personal need — anxiety at night with no app that truly helped.
  • Built to combine journaling, affirmations, and breathing in one quiet space.
  • Designed around privacy because honest writing requires a safe space.

I didn't set out to build an app. I set out to stop my mind from racing at 3am.

This is the story of why Let It Be exists.

The problem I was trying to solve

Anxiety, for me, peaks late at night. The day's worries pile up, and by midnight they're circling. The same thought, over and over. What I needed wasn't distraction — it was somewhere to put it all down.

So I tried journaling apps. A lot of them.

Some were beautiful but overwhelming — dozens of features, dashboards, integrations. Opening them on an anxious night felt like walking into a busy room when what I needed was a quiet corner.

Some were simple but limited — a blank page and nothing else. When your mind is racing, a blank page is the enemy. I needed a gentle prompt, something to start the words flowing.

None of them had the breathing exercises I wanted alongside the journal. Or the affirmations I'd been collecting in a notes app. I was switching between three different apps on my worst nights — one to breathe, one to journal, one to find a kind word.

So I built what I needed

Let It Be started as a personal project. A journal with guided prompts, a library of affirmations, a simple breathing animation, and mood tracking — all in one calm app. No noise. No streaks. No dashboards.

The design was intentionally quiet. On an anxious night, the last thing I wanted was colour explosions and congratulatory badges. I wanted warm colours, soft type, and a page that felt safe to write on.

Privacy was non-negotiable. My journal entries were deeply personal — worries, fears, things I'd never say out loud. They needed to stay on my device. Not on a server, not in a cloud I couldn't control. Just on my phone, behind my face lock.

What it became

What started as a personal tool turned into something more. I showed it to friends who dealt with anxiety. They showed it to friends. People started using it in ways I hadn't planned — for processing grief, for therapy homework, for nightly reflection, for morning gratitude.

Let It Be grew into a guided journaling app for anxiety, overthinking, and self-reflection. It now includes:

  • Daily guided prompts designed for anxious and overthinking minds
  • Mood tracking that reveals emotional patterns over time
  • Hundreds of affirmations across categories like anxiety, confidence, self-love, and healing
  • Breathing exercises — box breathing, 4-7-8, and more
  • Manifestation tools for clarity and intention
  • A calm, beautiful design that stays quiet on purpose
  • Complete privacy — entries on your device, always

Why it matters

The mental wellness space is noisy. Every app wants to gamify your calm, track your streaks, and sell you a subscription to your own peace of mind.

I wanted the opposite. A free, gentle app that's there when you need it and silent when you don't. A safe space that's actually safe.

That's what Let It Be is. It's the app I wish I'd had on those 3am nights — and now it's the one I hope helps you on yours.

Where to go from here

If this resonated, read the story behind Let It Be for more on how the app evolved, or what we believe about mental wellness for our philosophy.

And if you'd like to try the app itself, Let It Be is free to begin — calm, private, and in your pocket whenever you need it.

Take away

  • Let It Be started as a personal tool, then became something bigger.
  • The best products come from solving your own problem.
  • Privacy isn't a feature — it's the foundation of honest self-expression.
  • A calm design is an intentional choice, not a lack of ambition.
